Project: Septembers Project: Collect Children's Books or Bookshelves
Website: BOOKS...BOOKS...BOOKS...BOOKS...BOOKS...BOOKS...BOOKS...BOOKS...
Start Date: 2010-09-01
End Date: 2010-09-30
Time Commitment: Donation of Books or Bookshelves
Description: There is no question that children having access to books, and having books in their home, encourages reading... and that reading initiates an interest in our world and success in school! Books are expensive to buy and when you are barely making ends meet each month it is an unaffordable luxury. Volunteers of Lake Country wishes to work to put books in the hands of children in need in our community. We are establishing and will work to maintain a VLC Children' s Free Library. We have been given space at the Hope Center. Children will be able to select and take several books for themselves each time they visit. This will take a huge, ongoing commitment from those in VLC, and from the entire community...but so worth the effort! PLEASE set aside and watch for gently used books in your home, at rummage sales, and used bookstores...and consider purchasing one or two of your all time favorites to share with a child when you visit the bookstore! Be creative....perhaps put a collection box at your work, club or church, or place one on your porch and let your family, friends and neighbors know that you are a collection site, and have an on going commitment to collecting children's books to share with others. NEW and GENTLY USED, infant board books all the way up to Young Adult books are needed. (no text books or encyclopedias). Books can be dropped off at the Hope Center, 502 N. East Avenue/ Waukesha, Attn: Griselle, or at 702 E. Capitol Drive/ Hartland, in the enclosed front porch. We will also be accepting books throughout the day at Hartbrook Mall in Hartland on September 18th from 10:00-4:00. Please let us know if you are willing to share 1-2 hours of your time to collect at the site that day. Contact Dave Wolken dwolken@wi.rr.com or Mary Pfeiffer at maryspfeiffer@gmail.com to learn more about how your organization or business can hold a collection.

Project: November & December's Project- Sponsor a Child in Need for Christmas
Website: http//christmasclearingcouncil.org
Start Date: 2010-10-24
End Date: 2010-12-15
Time Commitment: A commitment of $60.00 of gifts per child you sponsor
Description: VLC ran this project last year, and the response was amazing! 56 VLC families sponsored 122 Children for Christmas in 2009...and the stories we received from YOU about your feelings about this project, and your deliveries to these families made us all cry! We know that once you sponsor at Christmas...it becomes part of your Christmas Tradition, and we are confident that the 56 families who participated last year will be back, and we will be building from there! Sponsoring a child in need at Christmas is a very personal giving experience. It is a commitment of spending $60.00 on a child, and a bit of your time. Based on your budget for giving, you can tell us if you wish to sponsor a family with 1, 2 or 3 children etc... We will match you with a specific family...a family who is struggling to make ends meet...a family who does not have extra at the end of the month...a family in Waukesha County...or a family right in our Lake Country Community, who cannot afford to provide Christmas this year for their children. EVERY child deserves Christmas! Last year Christmas Clearing Council (the non-profit we will be working with, who qualify the families) served 4,600 children in Waukesha County...over 200 were in the Lake Country area. I am in their offices every day from mid-Oct-Dec. as the Volunteer Coordinator. If you wish to sponsor, sponsor through VLC. Click 'volunteer' and I will send you the form. You fill it out, email it back to me, and I will process your application and personally look for a family to match you with. You will be given the families name, address and phone number. You will call the mother, get the child's (childrens) 'wish/need' list, shop, and make arrangements to deliver the gifts to the family by December 15th.
